Bathrooms are increasingly becoming spaces where we focus on style and unique decorations. It’s no surprise then that the question arises: can Finnish moss be used in this part of the house? The answer isn’t straightforward – it all depends on the conditions in your bathroom. If you want to find out whether preserved moss is a good idea for bathroom decor – read on.
Humidity – the biggest challenge for moss in bathrooms
Finnish moss is a natural material that has undergone a preservation process, making it maintenance-free – it requires no watering or sunlight. However, despite these advantages, it is not completely resistant to moisture. In typical bathrooms where humidity levels can reach up to 80% and remain high for long periods, preserved Finnish moss is not the best choice. Excessive moisture encourages mold growth and can ruin the decorative look. That’s why, if you dream of a moss wall in your bathroom, first ensure the space is VERY WELL ventilated – ideally with a modern air recuperation or dehumidifying system. Otherwise, even the most beautiful dark green Finnish moss will quickly lose its aesthetic appeal.
When can Finnish moss be used in a bathroom?
This doesn’t mean you have to give up on green decorations in every bathroom. If your bathroom has excellent air circulation, mechanical ventilation, and rarely any steam, Finnish moss can be used – provided it is monitored regularly. It’s best to avoid placing it near the shower, bathtub, or sink. A better option is to place the moss on walls far from steam sources, for example near the bathroom entrance. You could also create a green niche with LED lighting, which is much safer for the material. Such a composition will add a luxurious spa-like feel to your interior without exposing the moss to damaging conditions.
